I am currently a pharmaceutical rep however I would like to get into corporate event planning and marketing since I do not have experience I am thinking of taking a online certificate course from UMASS. I wanted to know if corporations see this and laugh or will this help me get a foot in the door? Help please

Advanced certificates are worth something. It shows you took initiative and determination.

A shift in careers (in this case, sales to event planning) will necesitate a latteral or even backward step. Keep that in mind as you look for jobs. Once you’re in, you’ll have to prove yourself and make a name for yourself in your new career.

I am new at my firm as their only Marketing Representative and since I have been here, I have been calling most of their prospective leads, and learning about the company’s products. Today I started to call different companies to try to have a meeting with their staff to see what luck we may get for people to enroll into the programs, but it is so hard to get people to sign up especially as most of them is complaining that they don’t have enough money.

What strategy do you think that I can use to get people to sign up on our distant programmes and how do you think I should approach these prospective students.

Show the relationship of the program to their work and advancement. Arrange for a payment plan. See if they can get time off for taking the class./

if you were looking to be a salesman or sales rep. would it be taken seriously or would it be better for me to just go to a college and get my education there.

People who hire salesmen look for a personality type. Someone who does not get discouraged by rejection. Someone who is more "positive" about life and life’s prospects. You are born to be a salesman.

So, no, the online degree is not going to be of much help. Most employers who want "education" will be looking for you to spend 4 years at an institution of higher learning.

You can attend a state university for 4 years for $40,000 total if you watch every penny and live at home.

I have an Associates Degree in Liberal Arts and currently work in sales. I would like to go back to school and earn a Bachelor’s and maybe move onto something higher after that. I took a couple of years off from school after some personal issues that I went through and I’m ready to move on in my life. I’m a little all over the place in my interests – I’m considering Journalism, Entrepreneurship, Marketing, Teaching English as a Second Language, Education, stuff like this. I know I sound all over the place but I’m going to choose something and go for a Bachelor’s so that I can improve my marketability and skills.

Money and time are issues for me. I am considering an online degree but the "reputable" ones are pricey. By reputable I mean most advertised, well-known. Asking around, a co-worker told me he was taking courses at ESC – Empire State College which says it is a SUNY school. Sounds good to me since SUNY has pretty good standards in my eyes with the most affordability.

My specific questions are:
1) Anyone have any personal opinions/experience on this particular college?
2) Will getting an online degree be valued appropriately by an employer?
3) Will I have trouble transferring this degree to another school if I were to continue my education either in NY or elsewhere?
4) Do you have reputable, accredited (and affordable) online college recommendations?

I do not know much about ESC. But what i can tell you is that acquiring an online degree would definately be valued by employers. The recognition for online learning has improved and at the present time employer’s consider online degrees on the same footing as traditional school based degrees. Online education credits are transferable so you need not worry about transfering your degree if you go for higher education. I am an ACCA tutor based in Srilanka.I have an idea of launching an ONLINE-LIVE-TUITON service for UK residing students. India and Srilanka are doing well in online tuiton industry with a rapid growth rate of 400% per year. UK/US students prefer south-asian tutors bcoz,they get tha same quality education like in the UK/US, for a fraction of the cost. Now, I need one or more person/s,to popularise our online tuiton service in the UK, by doing some simple activities such as posting ads on local newspapers,issuing hand-bills to libraries,word of mouth ad,etc.etc. We are not a large corporate group to start offices in the UK. I can’t put ads on Craigs or Gumtree etc.bcoz,my country, SL, is not listed in those sites.(ie,an ad can b posted,but,it never appears).Our target group of students in the UK amounts at more than 150,000. If the UK rep/s can find atleast 50 students per term (a term is 6 months),they can easily earn GBP 3500(or US$6500 approx.) per month. As UK residing reps are the people who are going to deal directly with students including collecting fees,there is no chance of getting scammed(unless the reps scammed us!). But, my big question is: how can I find one or more (responsible) part-timers who can represent us in the UK? Web ads result in zero,bcoz,who search these in net? The most searched word is "sex". I have never heard the word tuiton, but in the US, a similar word is tuition. Tuition is the money a student pays to a university for their coursework. It has nothing to do with what we call "tutoring." Tutoring is when a mentor helps a student to study, prepare for tests, understand what they read or what they heard in class.
