best way to do this, I understand it is called SEO or something, what companies do this and what kind of cost would I expect to spend. Its alternative therapy business that is very rare so there won’t be a huge amount of competition to do this but at the moment if I type my web address into google it space bar its not even registering.

Hi Tao,

Best thing do to for your business website right now is to start with

1) META tags
Define your title, keywords and website description

2) Indexing of your website
Submit your website manually to all the search engines

3) Backlinks
Try to partner up with different websites within the same niche and anchor your keyword that you want to rank for so for example
< a href = " your website " >alternative therapy< / >

If you do this, believe me, you will be on the good path. I also send you an email if you need any help with this. I am glad to help you :)

My name’s Clark Banach and while I’m full of confidence and have made it through some easy classes in college, I really know very little about anything regarding web development and design.

Can I still create a business, even if I’m not qualified? I’ve gone out of business like 4 times with 2 people, but I still want to try again. What do you think?

Haha, why would you want to create a business doing something you are horrible at?

You better name it something else now, because when people search for your company on a search engine, they’ll see this post.

The answer though, is yes, you can still own a web development and/or design firm without having met any qualifications. I’ve owned a web development company for just about two years (although I am not horrible at what I do).

I am starting a web design business and I am not sure. I just want to design, I don’t want to do any webmastering for anyone. I just want to sell a design. Is this what most web designers do? Or do they also set it up and get it online and running for them?

I agree with Jay above, there are far too many "just designers" already. Your best bet is to find a specialty and work for a company that uses you for just that. To be a generalist and make decent money now you need to know at least a dozen languages and be fluent with Flash and AS3 just to cover your bases.

I want to start a small web-based business selling my photography both as matted prints as well as blank cards and even up to poster size. so i’m looking for the following information:

1) is there an easy way to build a web-site that customers can pay on-line for items?
2) does anyone know how to find print companies that will print the images I need and direct ship?

Thanks for all the hopeful help

In additional to Yahoo…GoDaddy has a very inexpensive offering and self-service website building. In regards to printing and direct ship, you should try Vistaprint.com. They are extremely reasonable and have built a great business over the years.

Good luck….

Hello, I want to set up a web hosting business. I am good at using a computer, I know all basic stuff. I would like to know anything about web hosting that will be useful. Could someone tell me what hardware and software i need. How to set it up, and what website sell it cheap. Also does anyone know any good websites explaining all this. Especially setting the servers up, what i need. Thank You, Could you please help me

Hey Kenneth,
What you would probably be looking for is a company that does reseller hosting. There are many of them out there, but I personally would recommend Hostgators’. Hostgator has plans starting at $24.95 a month, which is really cheap if you plan on selling this hosting. With that said though, if that isn’t enough for you they have other plans available as well. When you become a reseller they provide you with a hosting reseller panel, a hosting managing system, and the ability to control user information such as passwords and emails. On their website they also have a control panel demo, which gives you a feel for what it will be like running your reseller business. I definitely recommend that you check it out.. I’ve posted the link to their site below:

I have a very sophisticated website doing a business process and already have 5 large customers using the website after paying. But due to expensive software development cost I have no money to market the product. Suggest me what should I do and give me some ideas.

"If you build it, they will come" is not necessarily true on the Web. Putting a website up is one thing, but getting visitors to come to your site is another. Getting them to buy your product is another thing. The process becomes even more difficult if you have limited resources to market your business.

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your product is your best advertisement – if visitors love your product, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Given that you are selling a software, offer a 30-day tryout period. Let the users use your product so they can see how useful it will be for them.

3. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important — and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more – that’s additional traffic that you get for FREE!

4. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

If you are going to read only one piece on search engine optimization, I suggest you read Brett Tabke of WebmasterWorld.com’s "Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone: 26 steps to 15k a day." http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum3/2010.htm

5. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. My website (see my profile) accepts free press release submission (no strings attached!)

6. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings. This strategy is not really for getting buyers, but more for getting your brand name out there and getting more links to your website.

7. Improve your conversion. Getting visitors is one thing; getting them to buy your products is a whole different story. Read the article "10 Ways to Convert Visitors to Buyers" http://www.powerhomebiz.com/072005/conversion.htm for tips on how to improve your conversion rates.

8. Get your product reviewed by software review publications and websites. This strategy alone can bring tremendous publicity for your business.

I am interested in starting a web based business. I have an idea for a company that I feel is not already created. I also need to find some one to help build my website and program the site. My question is how can I protect my idea so that the people I trust to help me do not steal my idea. Should I get it copyrighted, patented or what and where is the best place to get that done.

Each nation has one or more organizations associated with copyrighting, patenting etc.

Here is one used in the USA

http://www.uspto.gov/

However, to protect your idea, you not only have to get it registered with the government, you have to be actively on the lookout for potential competitors using your idea, and taking them to court.

It might be wise to have your employees sign a non-compete statement, which bars them from working in the same kind of business for some # of years after they leave your company.

in fla do you need a business license to run a web site business or any where else?

That all depends on what type of web site. If it’s your own web site, and your sole owner, then yes you should get a DBA type of license.
However if you collaborate with a company and you have a business within a business, then no you do not. Their license will umbrella you.
